Although I have not finished reading this book, I am thoroughly enjoying the author's treatment of one of Christianity's most venerated practices, the Eucharist. The author writes as if she were chatting with a friend, describing how she feels and what it Is that most draws her to this observance. The subject could be cloaked in pious description, but the author chose instead to present a brief history of the practice, what it means to her, as well as a discussion about her personal participation in the ritual. And that is what makes it appealing to me.

I decided to read this book in hopes of gaining a better understanding about the sometimes confusing practice of communion. While I don't think the book was exactly what I was hoping it to be, I did find the book to be interesting and also gave me some meat to chew on. The book is part history of communion and part personal memoir.Throughout the book, I really enjoyed the stories Nora told of her own experiences with communion. So often, we only have one view of communion, especially if we only experience the one served in our own church/denomination. Her stories and experiences helped to widen my view of the practice of communion. I especially liked how she broke communion into three parts - the waiting, receiving and afterward. I liked those descriptions. It was early on in the book, but a section really stood out to me. "Keep your head down and don't get into trouble, and you will come out okay. The problem with this kind of religious practice is that it isn't about God; it's about an institution's longing to keep itself going, our desire to fit in, and expecting this effect from this cause. We mistake middle-class conventions or church rules or traditions for the secret code that unlocks the kingdom." I appreciated this reminder that it's not always about how we do practices or the importance of doing them in the first place. It's about what happens while we are doing them. While there were some spots I didn't understand and confused me, like many other readers, I appreciated reading a new take on the practice of communion. It took a while to read - it was interesting but did not grip me to read all night. This is not a book for a newer Christian or someone with many theological questions, but overall, I thought it was an ok book. Not life changing, but certainly life enhancing.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze®.com [...] book review bloggers program. Gallagher attempts to offer insight into the Eucharist in a strictly feeling-based, emotional assessment. Lacking Biblical foundation and understanding of the deep sorrow and intense joy that is experienced through the Eucharist, she shares only experiences of serving and taking communion. As I read, it felt like she was unwrapping a chocolate bar but never describing the ingredients or the actual taste. Jesus meant this act to signify our communion with him and solidarity in "taking up our cross" and offering ourselves as a sacrifice. It is meant to include us in a deep understanding of our depravity and his grace. There is no mention of a Biblical foundation for why we take communion and what it means for us as Christians that the body was broken and the blood poured out for you and me. This book is lacking any substance. Very poor choice of author for this series as it does a disservice to The Ancient Practices Series. I was very disillusioned by Gallagher.

As a parish minister, I am often asked for resources to help congregants become more at home with the ancient--too often thought to be archaic--practices of the church. Of these practices, there are none more problematic for my United Church of Christ congregation than Holy Communion. In Gallagher's book, I have found a gift I can give to confused, doubting, wanting-to-believe seekers who fear to draw too close to this sacred meal, and yet do not want to push back from it either. One of Gallagher's gifts is her ability to write about the mysteries of faith in concrete images that invite us closer, connect to the real experiences of our lives, make us believe that even we are spiritual beings. She draws clear and compelling images of "ordinary" holiness. And every now and again, she takes my breath away with insights such as "I hope not to become one with God in such a way as to lose my own sense of self and boundaries, but instead to become in God more like myself."I highly recommend this book.

This is a great view into the practice of communion. The author intertwines stories and experience with theology. It's woven together very well in a style that flows naturally. While not the only view, it is a good overview of the sacrament.
