London Bridges (Alex Cross Novel), by James Patterson

From Publishers Weekly

Any thriller writer, wannabe or actual, would do well to study Patterson's 10th Alex Cross novel. A sequel to last year's The Big Bad Wolf, the book is a model of economy, delivering a full package of suspense, emotion and characterization in a minimum number of words. The story brings back not only Big Bad Wolf's arch-villain, the Russian mobster known as the Wolf, but also an earlier Patterson bad guy, the Weasel, recruited by the Wolf to further his plans. These involve extorting Western powers for billions of dollars to avoid major terrorist attacks on New York, London, Washington and Frankfurt—attacks the Wolf offers a preview of by wiping out a town in Nevada by aerial bombardment after hustling its citizens to safety, then by doing the same to a village in England without evacuating the populace. The novel features numerous exciting scenes, most notably one in which Cross is kidnapped, then shackled to a suitcase atomic bomb. It's not the steady tension, the numerous colorful locales, the reliable action climaxes nor the novel's effective doomsday gloss that makes this thriller work so well, though. It is, of course, the characters, and in Cross, Patterson continues to elaborate his finest hero, cerebral yet emotional, dedicated yet flawed, caught between duty and family. Regrettably, the novel is marred in its final chapters by a series of surprises that skirt playing unfair with the reader, but most Patterson fans probably won't mind and they are legion enough to send this to the top of the charts, for good reason. Continuation of world class terrorist and serial killer as they cris cross the world and America Killing people. The terrorist sets up an organization to steal (embezzle) millions of dollars or he will destroy four cities around the globe.Dr. Cross, now working for the FBI, chases the UNSUBS around the globe trying to identify them.He manages to kill the serial killer after a confrontation and spends the rest of the book looking for the mastermind.Another well written book by this author who impresses with his attention to detail, especially police matters. A book that captures the reader from the opening page.

James Patterson's, London Bridges is a fast moving. Alex Cross, a fine dective with a P hd degree, is part of the FBI hunt for the "Wolf." But, who is the Wolf? Male or female? From Florida, New York, Paris, just where is this person and how does the Wolf know just what the FBI and other governmental law enforcement agency's plans are? Is there in "insider" from one of these agencies that tells him? The Wolf is so powerful that he has asked for ransume from governments to keep him from destoying city after city. A fine read. Rated for all ages. Some strong language. DP, Castro Valley, CA.

What can you say about a series about a Forensic Psychologist who works for the local PD and the FBI, chasing serial killers. love the whole Detective Cross series. This book, "london Bridges," is one of the better crafted stories, spanning a chase which takes place first in London, and then the US. The killer is a Detective, himself, and I am not giving any vital plot secrets away, since Patterson lets the reader know early on in the first 50 pages. Alex Cross has more than met his match with this ingenius killer.

How can somebody write such a good book one time and such mediocre trumpery the next? C'mon James Patterson, You can do better, you wrote Kiss the Girls and Jack and Jill both great novels. Then again, you've wrote some bombs too. I won't say London Bridges is your biggest bomb but I will say it's your biggest Alex Cross stinker.London Bridges incongruously starts out with a Russian master criminal, known as the Wolf, hiring a psychotic serial killer, thought to be dead, called the Weasel after first capturing and torturing him.A few days later a small central Nevada mining town is obliterated. At this time FBI analyst Dr. Alex Cross is brought into the investigation. Some how a video surfaces which catches the Weasel filming the prelude to the disaster, showing dozens of apparent Army troops herding the three hundred residents into buses and evacuating them before a huge bomb is dropped destroying the town.Alex Cross is stupefied on discovering the Weasel is still alive. A few days later a small town in Scotland is annihilated but this time the residents are not vacated. Investigators are again clueless as to who is doing these things and the purpose for this destruction. The Wolf's plan is to extort a couple billion dollars and freedom for specified political prisoners and he makes his demands by phone to the assembled top law enforcement officials in the government. Seventy-two hours to meet his demands or he would, destroy New York, Washington, London and Frankfort if his demands are not met. Once the Wolf makes his demands known, Cross realizes that the Weasel is working for The Wolf and he finds the idea of these two psychopathic criminals teaming up, chilling.ConclusionI'm sure many James Patterson fans found this book enthralling but as a part time fan I thought the story was silly and the way it was written unusual. There isn't anything glaring that I can point to but I had the feeling this story could easily be a comic book story. Ultra bad bigger than life heavies, playing around with Cross and always three steps ahead of the authorities. Written in a jerky style consisting of 124 chapters in 326 pages, the story kept you turning the pages but left you wondering "where`s the beef?" The longest chapter was probably four pages and this also contributed to the comic book effect. The story itself was so outlandish as to become incongruous. The Wolf was ostensibly a cold war Russian defector whom our government, incredulously had no record of or pictures of. Patterson tried unsuccessfully to explain how this could happen, which is something he managed to do throughout the book, like how the elusive Weasel after having Cross running around in circles confronts him, so Cross can kill him. Another thing that bothered me was the Wolf kept giving everybody extensions. I didn`t think really BAD guys gave extensions. True he blew up a couple bridges (hence the title).killing dozens of innocents to make his point but really, The Wolf at that point lost his evil persona.Patterson finally managed to surprise me with the ending but no, that's not the end. He had to screw it up by confusing the issue, reminding me of one of those corny movie scenes where the good guy kills the bad guy only to have him come back again and maybe again.Hard core James Patterson fans may enjoy this one but for the rest of you I wouldn't think so.

Another great piece of the Alex Cross saga!Patterson writes these stories around just enough current events so you can believe that the action might really happen that way. The violence portrayed is a reminder of how far we have allowed our natural morals to decline. If you think it is all fiction, study the media reports on interaction between police and drug lords or soldiers and insurgents. The skepticism I do have about the Cross series is that a white writer in modern America could believe that a black psychologist and law enforcement officer would maintain the same level of respect from others in all parts of the country or that he could entertain his lady friends in the high-brow eating and sleeping places he describes. Our rednecks and snooty rich would make many problems. Oh yeah, this is fiction. Thanks again James for an exciting run,

I really enjoyed the foreign locations, and the premise of a Russian agent defecting was believable. It could have basis in a true story. The twists and turns made it exciting, but not so complicated that the reader loses track of who's who. My only criticism is that someone as smart as Wolf wouldn't change his entire face but then forget the one tell that identified him...the rubber ball.Nevertheless, I found "London Bridges" to be a great story...I neglected all sorts of tasks in order to get to the conclusion! I couldn't stop reading it!

Another good Alex Cross story for a while but.... Who was Mrs Lodge and did she really have something to do with taking Nana and the kids? Who was the guy that got the plastic surgery that fell from the building that she supposedly gave up that conveniently had a chip (seriously? A chip? That no one knew about?) implanted in him? Why wasn't all this information about the Wolf and Wier available much sooner? It conveniently becomes available suddenly and completely after months of supposed searching for links. I've liked the Alex Cross series, but this was a huge let down. It's like Patterson just got tired of writing and manufactured evidence and a connection with Lodge's wife out of nowhere just to get it over with, then didn't explain any of it. Plus....it even implied the plastic surgery guy WAS the Wolf! Deeply disappointed....
