Stryvant succeeds in significantly upping the tension in this series by bringing the U.S. Federal Government into the plot. It turns out that the government has known about mages and lycanthropes from the beginning of the nation and thanks to the Treaty of York has basically ignored the activities of mages so long as they leave U.S. citizens alone and maintain the “silence” so that everyday Americans do not find out about their existence. Lycanthropes were accepted as the property of mages which makes sense seeing as the U.S. accepted black slavery in the country at its founding. However, the war between the lycanthropes and the mages is becoming louder and some mages have abandoned the silence and committed atrocities in their efforts to kill Stryvant’s hero, Sean. Sean’s responses to these provocations are increasingly brutal. The U.S. can no longer sit on the sidelines, but it’s still not clear who they will support in the ongoing war. I still haven’t made my mind up as to whether or not I like how the government is handled by Stryvant. It forced me to exert a little extra suspension of disbelief. But good or bad he still increased the tension in a way the mages have failed to do over the last few books. And with different factions in the government wanting to handle the lycanthrope/mage war in ways that promote their own interests—not necessarily the good of the country—there is room for a lot more tension in future books. We’ll just have to wait and see if Stryvant can pull it off.

More complex than the previous stories with the introduction of political issues, potential spies and potential international contacts. In addition the magic tech was advanced by a large leap that could lead to some serious transportation and energy generation income. Lots of potential. We'll see how it develops but hopefully it will develop quickly because it needs to. As other authors have pointed out, the US government is not a monolith. Quite often one hand doesn't know what the other is doing and the government doesn't have just two hands so the MC will need to increase defenses and infrastructure to independent levels before any negotiations take place or the MC will be in a weak position the government _will_ exploit. The main character still needs to work on some serious fortress and personal defenses but that bit of stupidity seems intentional as it was mentioned in one of the battle scenes. That issue will hopefully be addressed soon. The main character appears to be offloading responsibilities which is good. Hopefully the author won't do what most fantasy authors do and push a character that keeps all the power centralized. If the author wants to create a really realistic scenario his MC will do what good leaders do and make everyone around him stronger. A good start was made but nothing apparently very impressive based on how easily one of his closest people was captured.Having a centralized development location is tactically and strategically inefficient when recreational vehicles, trailers, big rig transports and such are easily available. And having such portable resources is much nicer for the troops. And if the defenses are enchanted, much safer than tents.A smelting center for his own currency and bullion should probably be created soon. And the dwarf traitor should be dealt with soon as well. If he wants friendly relations with the surrounding mages that would provide an opportunity for mages, dwarves and lycans to come together over the body of a treacher.A few errors, one where Vestibulum was used when Ascendancy should have been used (when Chad was waiting for a mage to negotiate entrance into a compound) and a name change concerning Wang and Wong toward the end of the negotiations with the Dragon triad leader. Nothing serious. In any event well worth the read and quite fun.

First of all, my reason for four out of five stars. If you write something that compares favorably with "Lord of the Rings" or "Shogun" or any of the other classics then you will have rightfully earned a perfect score. Four stars from me means that I see potential in what you have created and that I sincerely hope that you will achieve what is really quite rare, a masterpiece. As for this work, it is very entertaining. It is one of those stories that you can lose yourself in and not feel you have wasted the time it took to read. The characters developed nicely through the story. You learn things about them in much the same way that you would a new friend. If the harem fantasy and well written erotica combined with riviting action adventure is your cup of tea, then this story well worth the price.
