This goes both for the beauty of the embroidery as well as the presentation of it in an absorbing book like this. Luscious, inviting, intriguing, amazing...these are all words that hit me as I page through and linger over the exceptionally good close-up color pictures as they highlight both texture and depth quite well. Author Lizzy Lansberry states she is a 2009 graduate of the 3-year apprenticeship course at the Royal School of needlework, the crème de la crème of embroidery schools in the Western world. These are other books of theirs you might like:Royal School of Needlework Embroidery TechniquesThe Royal School of Needlework - Book Of Needlework and EmbroideryGoldwork (Essential Stitch Guides)Blackwork (Essential Stitch Guides)One thing I really like about this book is that it calls most often for evenweave fabric. The author discusses thread counts of linen fabric from 20 to 55 per inch, her preference being 32-count Belfast linen, one of my favorites as well. These whitework technique are often applied to fine linen which is not counted but free style but I prefer the former as it's easier to follow a pattern, whether my own or someone else's. The illustration of each of the techniques is excellent. I could gather the materials and tools needed and set off right away to happily stitch. The very best thing about a book like this is it inspires you to believe that, yes, with a little dedication you could put it into practical use. I love how on a very practical basis, the difference between pulled thread and drawn thread is covered seamlessly (excuse the pun) though many whole embroidery books muddle the two techniques as if the're interchangeable: they're not. Drawn thread is when you cut and remove some number of, usually, weft threads (the horizontal ones) which leaves a row of vertical threads to decorate and manipulate. To anchor the threads you either weave the 2 cut ends back into the fabric; the most common way, however, is to make a row of satin stitches and then cut very close to their edge. If you're familiar with hardanger, picture kloster blocks. In all my huge library of needlework books and my many on whitework, I've never, ever seen slanted satin stitches or, wow!, French knots to anchor the cut threads! You learn something new every day. I like the variety of hemstitches shown and the photos are particularly easy to follow.Whereas pulled thread does not remove any threads from the ground fabric; rather, you mostly use fibers which are as fine or finer than the ground fabric to manipulate the threads and "pull" them out of shape, generally to produce lacy effects. Eyelets are the most common and easy pulled thread stitches. Of course, you can combine both into the same pattern for a lovely effect and combination stitches are deftly discussed throughout this book. For cutwork, this book takes the fear out of it. Using the buttonhole stitch over 2 concentric circles of back or double running stitch which have the thread then cut away is so clear. It's very rare for a book to show you how to anchor the working thread on the back and then bring the needle up inside the hole and down on the outside of the 2 circles and THEN make the anchoring buttonhole stitch by catching the thread loop from the previous trip. If this explanation isn't clear, the book's discussion and accompanying series of close-ups is. This is one of the best books I've seen for clearly displaying each step of a stitch--between 6 and 8 close-up photos beginning with where you first bring up the needle from the underside. The final main chapter entitled "Moving on: Reworking a Traditional Design" is the intimidating part...er...wait--it's very inspiring. Even if I can't bring myself to this level of expertise, if I have tried my hand at the previous chapters' coverage, yes, I can aspire to play around with the technique and truly make it my own. I have advanced to the point of wanting to design and this book walks me to that in a very conversational way.The author is speaking to me. Yes, that's how helpful the text and pictures are.On a personal note, I didn't purchase this book on Amazon though I could probably have saved a little money. But I'm oh so happy I bought it at the local used bookstore because of the name on the address label on the inside cover. It is Marlene's from my EGA chapter...her sons must have taken her needlework books there...because she died last December. So this book has great meaning for me beyond its intrinsic value.Buy this book. Whether you're interested in learning some new techniques or just like to look at beautiful stitching, you'll get a lot out of it. I own hundreds of needlework books and this is now among my favorites and destined to produce a project I can proudly display.P.S. Make sure you surf around the author and title to get the best deal.
The Royal School of Needlework is housed at Hampton Court and serves the royal family and the Church of England amongst others. The RSN also teaches embroidery in all techniques and textile history and preservation as well as offering workshops to amateur embroiderers. For those of us not lucky enough to be able to apprentice at the RSN or even attend a workshop, the RSN publishes books covering virtually every extant needlework technique and usually covers the history of the technique as well as providing instructions. The new book from RSN, Whitework, follows the standard format that has been so successful for both reader and writer in the past. First the history and style of the technique is detailed including variations and materials are reviewed. This section is always the perfect combination of comprehensive and efficient. Then various techniques, with illustrations of both historical and contemporary examples, are detailed with step-by-step photographed instructions. The examples are always inspiring and the techniques are easy to follow for even the beginning needleworker. RSN expects the best and provides the means to produce the best in their detailed written and photographed instructions. The techniques and styles usually progress from simple to more complex so the careful reader can build skills both by reading and by attempting the examples. Line drawings of patterns arent provided but the ambitious needleworker could easily make a cartoon of the various examples.Whitework covers Pulled Thread Embroidery, Decorative Surface Stitches, Eyelets, Drawn Thread Embroidery, Cutwork and even includes a small section on layered whitework and cutwork. I personally was disappointed that the layered section wasn't longer as I am familiar with the other forms of work and was hoping for more instruction in layered work, but that is purely a personal complaint and in no way affects the wonderful quality of this book and its instructions. Finally, when reading the about the author information I was thrilled to see that the author is a young, recent graduate of the apprentice program at RSN. Embroidery is a slow and painstaking art and doesn't have many adherents in the younger generation and I was excited that such a talented young embroiderer is already making her mark in the embroidery world.Whitework is recommended as a very good introduction to the basic forms of whitework with excellent, detailed instruction and many fine examples of the work. Further detail in any of the specific forms of whitework embroidery will require another book on that specific technique but Whitework will teach you all of the basics and intermediate forms of the style and will allow the reader to decide which forms of whitework she enjoys. Highly recommended as a good source as are all of the RSN needlework books.
I took a whiteworking class with someone from the Royal School of Needlework in London, and this book was among those spread out on the table for us to choose to buy. I already had it, but was glad to see that it is valued by those more in the know than I. It covers many techniques that interest me, and I have spent many pleasant hours perusing it, and working from it.
I like having different instructional books for the same type of technique. This book has excellent pictures, illustrations of the stitches used, and some patterns to play around with. Glad I purchased this for my stitching library.
This is my go to book for whitework instruction. I love the way it is set up. It is very easy to understand. I plan on buying some of the other Royal School of Needlework books soon.
perfect. loved it. just as described. well packaged, good shipping. very pleased.
This is a very complete guide to whitework embroidery. It contains some very interesting projects. It will be a great research for the future,
Wonderful book and shows several contemporary pieces along with adaptations. Covers several kinds of whitework so is a great intrduction. As there is no color, how the designs rely on texture and the designs themselves work together.
