Somehow after years of reading Easwaran's unmatched translations of the Upanishads and the Gita, I found his work on Meditation. Having practiced another form of meditation since the early '70s, it was a significant decision to try passage meditation. A little over a year later, my only regret is that I didn't learn this in the early '70s! Transformational! You become what you meditate upon. You can be the change you want to see in the world. The key is selecting a mantra or passage for oneself (such as the prayer of St. Francis) and then repeating it slowly, and letting the passage change your life.I love the simply practicality and grace with which Easwaran writes. His several works are brilliant, counter cultural, and he invites us to slow down our lives, and be mindful of the books we read and the movies we watch. It brings to mind a phrase I once heard; thoughts lead to actions, actions lead to behavior, behaviors lead to character, character leads to destiny.Highly recommended. You will not be disappointed.
This is my go-to meditation book. I first read it over ten years ago and have worked to implement the practice in my life since then. What is unique about this book is that it lays out an eight-point program of which mediation is one point. Each of the other seven points support the meditation practice and help bring the benefits into all aspects of your life. This approach, when embraced, will impact you mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I highly recommend the writings of Eknath Easwaran.
Having read two other books by Eknath Easwaran; "Seeing With the Eyes of Love" and "Words to Live By" I would rate this book third. There were some very good points, especially about not rushing your practice at first but limiting your meditation time to no more than half hour, and the importance of the mantram. When he writes about saying your mantram prior to stressful situations (like surgery) I found it to be very valuable. The author convinced me of the importance of memorization of favorite prayers, Psalms, and other spiritual materials.For those with a Christian background a book I discovered years ago, "The Light Within" by Laurence Freeman has become my mini- bible. I've read it over and over again.Hope this review is helpful to other seekers out there. We are all on the same journey.
This is a wonderful meditation teacher and a great method of meditation for almost anyone with a little time and the desire to improve so many aspects of their life. It can bring peace and calm to people in a troubled world and positively have a good effect on the people we interact with daily. The use of a mantram is also very helpful. This type meditation can belong to or adapt to any religion or philosophy of life. The Blue Mountain Center of Meditation offers support to people that chose to try this path. i am a bit of a fan of the writings and treatments of yoga by eknath, so heads up.this is a form of perceiving and practicing meditation according to mr. easwaran school of yoga. if you have not been successful at mediation you might find this useful.as a lng time teacher and practicioner of yoga i like this book and am glad to have it on my shelf.
