Joe Pane has been a hockey fan for nearly 60 years, ever since his father took him to his first New York Rangers game when he was nine years old. His love of and expertise in hockey were the perfect combination to tackle one of the most stunning sports stories of all time. Meanwhile, back at the expansion draft … Like a professional poker player, GM George McPhee tried to stay several moves ahead of his 30 counterparts. To fill out his 37-man roster, he chose―or had handed to him―hot young prospects with current credentials and future potential, strong veterans who could contribute to first-season success, low-ego team-oriented players who could provide a steady hand for an abandoned bunch of throwaways, and post-season stalwarts for whom playoff-bound teams might come calling as the trade deadline approached―or might help his own team make a deep run. As the details of the deals emerged, the wheeling and dealing looked like the world’s largest single-table poker game, where the chips were unprotected players, existing contracts, entry-draft selections, free agency, salary caps, and trade fodder, with backroom maneuvering, behind-the-scenes intrigue, side deals, and subplots going on all over the place. McPhee also had aces in the hole and up his sleeve during the process, in a position to act as a middleman for teams that fancied a valuable unprotected player. He could select him in the draft, then flip him to the highest bidder. That thickened the plot with a revolving cast of characters, introducing them with the intention of erasing them. No doubt McPhee also called some bluffs and picked some pockets by agreeing not to draft certain available players. At the same time, the expansion draft and deal-making left holes in the 30 teams, the filling of which necessitated even more arrangements and trades and transactions. Oh, and a lot of this was going on before the Golden Knights were officially in the league, which didn’t happen until March 1, 2017, after the last installment on the $500 million payment cleared the NHL’s bank account. Until then, McPhee was making what were referred to as “gentlemen’s agreements†and “agreements in principle.†I can only imagine the scrambling to ink official deals before the trade deadline occurred at three p.m. on the same day. And all this involved just skaters. How many millions of dollars discreetly changed hands? Only the general manager in the midst of this maelstrom knows for sure. The whole business assumed efficiencies in this unique marketplace, but plain old ineptitude presumably called some of the shots too. Some teams gave up more than they needed to in order to protect overvalued players; others underestimated assets that they should have held in higher esteem. And the expansion situation surely laid bare any number of skeletons in NHL closets―grudges, resentments, grievances, feuds, personality conflicts, and all the baggage that comes into play in the politics of sports. But finally, on June 20, 2017, the Vegas Golden Knights’ team roster was announced at the NHL’s 2017 awards show held, appropriately, in Las Vegas. When that happened, a trade freeze was lifted; also the annual entry draft followed right on its heels, setting off a whole new round of bartering and bargaining.

It is obvious from the first chapter that this book is written by a guy that knows and loves hockey. And only a person that was at the games with an eye to detail and strategy can know and retell the story written here. The VGK's first season will go down in history as one of those great sports stories in a city that really needed a win and a team that without any doubt deserved it. Required reading for every hockey fan and a great read for anyone who enjoys a well told story.
.If you missed the story of the Vegas Golden Knights then this book is a must read. It chronicles the birth of an NHL expansion team with inside information as well as providing background on all of VGK players. Not a fan of hockey? You don't have to be to enjoy the recap of every game played in the team's inaugural season as well as all the playoff games. If you are a fan of hockey and the VGK then relive the excitement you felt as the team advanced to the Stanley Cup finals as you read the book! DP
It’s impressive how much the author knows about hockey and how much I learned from reading the book. He presented a well-written explanation of exactly how the expansion team started as a group of misfits and cast-offs and became a cohesive powerhouse that healed and inspired a hurting city. I was moved to the point of tears, I laughed out loud at the descriptions of hockey scenarios, and I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I also found the outlined boxes between chapters explaining the technicalities, rules and hockey knowledge that isn't so well known very educational.There were two parts of the book, among so many, that really stood out for me: One - Learning that Danny Negreanu purchased so many tickets and donated them, I love that he is so charitable. Two - The Gordie Howelll hat trick - an assist, a goal, and a fight in every game - hilarious
This is a great book for people like myself who are new to hockey. It includes how the team was built from scratch, brief bios of all the players, synopsis of every regular season and playoff games, including when records were broken and fun little know tidbits. There are explanations of general hockey terms scattered throughout the book. It was fun to relive all the playoff games we attended. This is a must have book for all the true Vegas Golden Knights fans. The historic season was a treat to experience in person, now I have a way to relive it anytime in the future. .
Last week when my brother in law and his two children immigrated to Las Vegas I gave them each a #vegasstrong shirt. The next night they watched on television a Vegas Golden Knight pre-season game before going to see the Las Vegas Strip. They had never seen or watched a hockey game before.To understand my behavior one must read Joe Pane's book Vegas Golden Knights. His book articulates not only my feelings, but those of most people living in Las Vegas regarding how special the VGK have become to us.
I was encouraged to read this book to learn there is another sport besides football . I read the book and now I've become a Golden Knights fan. It was very easy to understand why Ice Hockey players and fans are so intense. It's fast , rough, exciting and requires great skill. The process of putting the whole organization together was interesting including choosing the players, locations, contracts, hiring the right people, etc. I'm looking forward to my first game in person.
This book was so much fun to read! It covers the whole season in detail, the incredible journey that this team took us on, and also has lots of cool backstory and hockey information. It was inspiring to relive the experience, I've read it twice already!
