I am one among the very few who has never watched a Frankenstein movie, but yet is very familiar with the name Frankenstein. Yet, it's highly ironic that popular culture (in film, television,etc.)has ironically came to confuse the name "Frankstein" with the Monster rather than the creator. This is one of the greatest attributes that has made Mary Shelly a genius of gothic and horror literature: uncertainty. She somewhat forces us to interpret the plot and the characters. For instance, who is really the monster, its creator or the monster itself? And most hauntingly, even more so to this day, where does science draw the line when it comes to the point that technology is playing the role of God? Even throughout the plot we aren't truly sure or convinced that any of the characters have grown wiser, or just sadder, if they learned anything at all. Is the monster a genius? Is he a murder, the "fallen angel," a representation of a neglected Adam? Or simply just a child of innocence that was neglected and somewhat forced into a life of melancholy, despair, and adversity? Even after Mary Shelly had revised Frankstein, she has never changed the story. Her haunting novel still awakens us to think about the knowledge and imagination of man, and its limits, and how dangerous it can become if we start trying to become a substitute of God, or the "modern Prometheus." I feel lucky that i have read this book before actually watching the Frankstein films, which i look foreward to seeing. But i know that the film doesn't follow Mary Shelly's novel exactly, however, it's a classic moment in pop culture. That has good points and negative points: first of all, regardless if people have read it or not, it opens us to a tale that still brings chills and suspense, and exemplifies the genius of the incredible author that made all of it possible. The sad thing is that people who have NOT read the book at all, and assume that they KNOW the story just from watching the classic Frankstein films, are truly missing out on a story that should be read, not just watched. I believe that people should learn this tale from literature first before pop culture. But from the looks of it, i guess it's easier to simply watch the film and be contented at that, which is fine. But hopefully, more people will be interested in knowing the true Frankstein who wasn't just some mumbling, grotesque creature, but one who was intelligent, articulate, an adept orator, and hauntingly just as human (and monstrous) as man itself.

This book was one of the biggest surprises for me! Absolutely NOTHING what I expected. When someone says word "Frankenstein", you think about a lab, a mad proffesor, some lightning buzzing into the bolts inside monster's head. Drop all this imagination! This classical book had nothing of it! :O Maybe that's why I was so amazed. If I didn't have all those expectations, maybe my rating would be lower, but now, damn, I liked it a lot! Since I have so much to say, I'll just drop it into a list, of good and bad things :)1) It's awesome that Amazon is giving free ebooks for classical literature like this! Thanks, Amazon! And what a surprise it was for me, that this Kindle edition is the real original "Frankenstein", but audiobook narrated by George Guidhall is of a later edition (which was edited by the author herself, when her book became famous). So reading those two books where more like reading two separate books for me - one ebook and one audiobook, with quite a lot of changes, even so major as who Elizabeth was to Victor - a real cousin, or just a girl taken from street! :O2) As I said, I have expected this book to be absolutely different! A horror story, about making a man from different body parts. Actually this only took a few pages of the book. All the book was Victor's thoughts about what he had done, creatures thoughts about humankind, and 3) a lot a lot A LOT of words misery, wretchedness and countenance :D My oh my, I have never read so many same QQing thoughts in my life! :D This book could be a good 5 star if Victor's thoughts weren't so TERRIBLY repetitive. He said he feels misery/is miserable/life's misery at least 135 times (just did a search in my Kindle). I won't even count other of his cryings. I should be ashamed of making fun of his inner tortures. Victor Frankenstein had a really difficult life, but I'm not if it was a good idea by the author to write it in such a repetitive way! but on the other hand - it was an absolutely different style from the books I usually read, so also a good thing.4) Never ever don't you dear call a man-made-man a "Frankenstein"! He didn't have a name! Frankenstein was his creator. But the creature was just that - a creature. And what a surprise he was! All my life I thought of Frankenstein's creature to be a mindless monster, with bolts in his head, making ugly sounds and walking like a zombie. That's what those movies show! But this was such a mistake of mine! :O Creature was one of the most intelligent characters in the story! His ability to deduct, to learn, to feel... he was amazing! The story creature told about his first year of life was so heartgripping that I felt so fond of him, so sorry for him... Sadly later he changed.. Loniness makes people (and other creatures) do bad things... :( But still.. he was not a mindless zombie. He was extremely sensitive being.. With emotions on extremities - both good and bad. But wouldn't we be like that, if we didn't have parents and comfort of other people to learn from?I highly recommend this book to everyone who wants to read some intricate English language, but who has enough patience to suffer though all characters' repetitive sufferings (pun intended).This book is emotional, but not in a romantic way. It makes You think about creators responsibility against the creation. And most of all, it shows how Your decisions can change Your whole life!

This was supposed to be the original 1818 version of the book, but it isn’t. It’s a bizarre copy - there are no publishing notes at all. It’s missing the Preface. I compared the first few chapters to an online version of the 1818 book and I noticed differences in Letter 3 where a whole paragraph was added. I would need to check the 1831 version to see if that is what this book is. I should return it but it was $4 and not worth the effort.

If you're reading this review, you only have one question. You're not looking for a book review, you already know it's a classic. You already know this is the most original, and one of the best, and best-written horror stories in literature. You may or may not like the story, but that's a matter of personal taste. A lot of people don't like Shakespeare, but no one questions whether he was a good writer or not. If you don't like the writing style, it's because you aren't familiar with the English of this period. Nearly eighty years before Stoker's "Dracula" ( an idea stolen from Polidori's "The Vampyre", which was an idea stolen from LeFanu's "Carmilla"), this most-original horror masterpiece was born. So, your only question is, "Is this really the uncensored 1818 version? Because I've only seen one other verified version, and it's over twenty dollars in paperback. All the others claiming to be the 1818 version have been disproved." YES, as far as I can tell, it is. The only preface is Shelley's own original. There is no introduction, no commentary or editorial credits whatsoever. There are no illustrations, and the spelling and language have not been edited. Have a good thesaurus handy. So, here it is, the author's original script, no frills, for a bargain price. Which is exactly what I was looking for.

Shortened and censored book of the true autobiography of Peggy Guggenheim titled "Out of this Century : Confessions of an Art Addict" at the moment - 30 august 2013 - not available to Kindle readers.The very similar title is misleading and I suggest not to read it.While the full autobiography "Out of this Century: Confessions of an Art Addict" is really enjoyable, full of wit and very open about her private life so strongly interwoven with her activity of collector, this shortened version looks like a flat puritan resumè.

This is the condensed version of the Peggy Guggenheim autobiography Out of this Century and leaves out everything connected with Max Ernst (that is a lot). I recommend reading the long version instead.

Who was Peggy Guggenheim? Personally, all I had until this read was a vague understanding that as a Guggenheim heir she contributed a lot to the art world. Pretty vague, no? Well, that's a lot more than many contemporary artists will come up with. In fact I mentioned this book to quite a successful modern artist and his response was, "She was pretty crazy, right?"Crazy, not when you read her writing, she wasn't. She had an amazingly open mind about what art is and what it ought to be. Amazing especially because her family, wealthy though it was, hadn't really given her much of an education in it. So I think what we have here is the liberating effect that vast wealth can inspire.I was taken with a kind of simplicity she exudes in her writing. Like a child, she delights in all manner of little things, while simultaneously entertaining the most sophisticated people in the world.She talks about marriages and relationships but never gets too detailed about it. I know her artist daughter Pegeen came to a bad end but as an example, she mentions nothing about her except to say that she collected her work. So, while the book is the interesting there is clearly a lot missing.

Some years ago, the Jewish Museum (NYC) had a most interesting exhibition on Jewish Women and their Salons, focusing on a limited number of women who made a difference in the art of their times by creating settings within which artists could meet with other artists and with patrons. In the fine book accompanying the exhibition (Jewish Women and their Salons:The Power of Conversation....by Emily D. Bilski and Emily Braun), they explain the absence of Peggy Guggenheim, among other very important women helping artists to become recognized-"We also distinguished those who held salons with regular hours and a circle of habitues, from occasional if important hostesses(such as Peggy Guggenheim)". In other words, being a small museum, half of whose viewing space is consumed by a permanent exhibition of whirlwind tour of Jewish art over the millenia, they had no room for more than five and they found a reason to exclude her and other outstanding Jewish women (eg, the Cone sisters of Baltimore) who provided financial and social support to artists often desperately in need of it. One understands the inexorable limitations, but also recognize that P. Guggenheim is right up there in creating a demand among collectors for modern art.I did not know, until reading through some of the reviews here that there was an earlier edition than the kindle one which revealed more of the "dirt", that is, more details of here sexual encounters over the years. There are a number of good biographies which will satisfy that yearning, but this one has the value of being the story the subject of those books decided to tell in her own way. No doubt it has been subjected to professional editing, but, nonetheless, its text shows every sign of being not unlike what she might write to someone not an intimate friend who wanted to know something about her life. Frankly, further details as to just who she 'slept' with and what they did together, are not missed by this reader As Ben Franklin is said to have said..............................Actually sufficient information is conveyed to give a glimpse of what it was like to be the daughter of the Guggenheim who didn't become mega-wealthy, although quite well off compared to 'ordinary folk'. She suggests the number and range of her associations, and also, what she tried to do for the artists to whom, rather early in life, she decided to dedicate her personal and financial efforts to trying to create situations which would allow those she patronized to become better known and more likely to be able to survive as artists. While she had many significant friends and associates, no doubt her NYC gallery, the marriage to Max Ernst, permitting him to escape Hitler by coming to America as husband of a citizen, her collection in Venice and her major financial and social support of Jackson Pollock, will rank most highly in art histories of the period.Rather than finding the prose style primitive, I found it simple and to the point. Obviously, it reflects what she and/or her publisher wanted to put down on paper. It is easy and enlightening reading. Hopefully, the average reader will want to know more and will turn to biographical sources for greater detail and more objective viewpoints. These will not supersede the value of the book

DO NOT PURCHASE the Kindle edition if you are looking for the complete version of Peggy Guggenheim's memoir. The Kindle edition is choppily edited and heavily censored, omitting the scandalous recollections for which her memoir is known. Additionally, the photographs included therein are miniscule and plopped in without context.

I enjoyed this Peggy Guggenheim memoir. Although brief, it condenses her collection into too few pages. She also foretells of the greed of collectors who buy bc the work is expensive. Her position as a “patron” of artists and their work is refreshing in light of today’s market. I didn’t realize it was her uncle’s collection that is the basis for the Guggenheim Museum in NYC, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright who designed it but died before its opening. She is an incredibly intriguing woman; I’ll look for a biography to learn more...

I have followed the Guggenheim art museums and especially like the New York gallery designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. It does seem strange however to walk up curved ramps to each level, and viewing is difficult. However,Peggy started the modern movement and is admired for her tenacity in the face of financial hardship at times. I agree that art today is for collectors and many of the new artists are not interesting.

I bought this book because it was cheap and because we were just about to visit the Guggenheim Bilbao. It was a great surprise. Very easy to read and packed with interesting art gossip of the time, Peggy really makes it work and brings to life many of the artists of her time. The palazzo in Venice that holds her collection, is not small at all as opposed to what she says in the book, but we knew that.

About the Author

As a scout leader and a former amateur magician myself, I wanted some ideas for things we can do on campouts and various scouting programs. I was fortunate to see Mr. Kings Las Vegas show 12 years ago and got another of his book autographed at that time. This one has easy and fun activities that are sure to brighten the campfire events.

SO,SO. MOST TO THE TRICKS REQUIRE A FAIR AMOUNT OF PREPARATION SO YOU CAN'T JUST PULL OUT A PIECE OF ROPE AND DO A TRICK. I WAS HOPING FOR MORE.

Great book by a great performer with some REALLY cool magic and stunts in it.

the kids i gave it to are enjoying it, you never know when a spark will catchwell written and easy to understand

I've known of Mac King for many years. He's a pal and a colleague. Any one who has sense and has gone to Las Vegas in the last decade has been held spellbound by his show at Harrah's. So, what a welcome addition to magic literature by the King family ! The illustrations are charming, the concept unique and the magic exceptional.
